I also really like The Emperor's Soul novella. I personally would also recommend Warbreaker and/or Elantris, as they're good and tell self contained stories. I haven't let myself start reading it yet, so I can't recommend it, but I've heard a lot of positive reactions. If you want to start in the deep end, his 10-book saga starts with The Way of Kings and Book 4 has been published. A sequel was discussed, but it hasn't been officially announced, I think. It deals a lot more in myth and religion and sacrifice as a centerpiece. Warbreaker is slightly more experimental, in that it's a relevant plot point that, in-universe, the magic system isn't well understood and pretty much everyone is just pretending to know what they're doing with it. But I've heard plenty of people dislike it for the same reason, though. As someone who likes conlangs and philosophy, the geekery about linguistics and the impassioned public debates were my jam. (And it's popular enough that there's a TTRPG.)Įlantris is nerdier. Mistborn is a trilogy, and then there's a second 4-book series in the same world, but with different characters, in a more cowboy-style setting, so there's plenty to dig into if you like it. It's "the heist" story, and the protagonist(s) are a band of thieves prosecuting a revolution against the oppressive powers that be. I'd recommend it absent any other considerations. Mistborn was his breakout work, and what most of his fans started with. They all have Sanderson's signature spin on the fantasy genre: the "hard magic system" where powers and abilities are fairly clearly defined and actively part of how the plot happens. Elantris, Mistborn, and Warbreaker are all solid starting points.
